zhan has trouble believing me when i say stuff like that but i dunno how else to put it? films involving that subject matter have ALWAYS been hard for me to watch, even if nothing explicit happens on screen. i could tell the movie was exquisitely acted and all the sets were spooky and wonderful and the shots they set up were visually intriguing and really just scintillating sometimes

but the entire experience left me feeling sick? maybe because of my own guilt re: pretension of creative people like myself, or the unresolved rift between high and low art that Fink was supposedly (supposedly!) grappling with? all the dialogues made me feel so uncomfortable, like i was waiting for the knife to drop after each confrontation. i guess that’s “excitement”, which admittedly i’m not used to feeling. the Cohen brothers, as zhan said, do love their tension and unresolved ambiguity. but that much of it starts to make me wanna bolt from the room and take a shower.

maybe the problem is with me, solely. seriously, it’s happened before where i can’t seem to stomach highly tense or anxiety-laden media. it’s why i can’t watch iron chef!!

(i am not comparing any cohen bros movies to iron chef i promise, it’s just me being silly)

i’ve really enjoyed all the other cohen bros films i’ve seen, and i can appreciate their own ambiguities and open-endings and vague symbolisms. although this was probably the best performance of John Goodman i’ve ever seen. i’m not a film or actor buff, at all, but gosh.

MAGNOLIAPEARL what do you think!! if you read this, you’re a film buff, tho i dunno how much you like cohen bros, if at all. do i sound nuts? i’d ask my only other film-savvy friend but he’d yell at me for watching cohen bros ERIC!! >8C

hahah I’m flattered to be called on for this!! gonna put this under a readmore, simply for length.

I do like the Coens a lot. Barton Fink is one of my favorites actually. I have rewatched it several times. I think on one level it is very straightforward in its message (that Barton is basically a jackass with no understanding of what he’s writing about, and a misunderstanding of his own role/importance) but also in a way… its a testament to truly great art? Which Barton is eventually capable of creating, just not when he thought he was. When Barton comes face to face with real life horror and comes through it, he does manage to create something that we can only infer has real value, only to have it shot down… but his quiet reflection at the end, to me, indicates a vague acceptance. He has created a work he is satisfied with, though its gotten him nothing. of course that interpretation is pretty much total projection on my part, considering how open-ended it is.

John Goodman’s character is great and to me represents Barton’s loathing and fear of the people he’s writing about- non-intellectuals, “rabble” basically; I think that idea generally rings true of self-described “sensitive” people. But Goodman is also playing a person genuinely worthy of being feared, which is why I appreciate his character- its not just a cut and dry “pretentious guy gets his comeuppance from Real Working Man”; there is a real horror discovered there that he must escape, as much as he has to escape the stifling flatness of the world he starts from.

Anyway, it is a difficult movie and I think feeling anxious about it is a valid response. There’s plenty of movies I don’t watch because I simply don’t want to voluntarily put myself through a bad experience (Trainspotting is one of them, because of the dead baby stuff). But I also think its a movie that can be uncomfortable for a lot of writers/artists out there, and- speaking for myself only, and maybe I’m out of line here, but- I think most of us basically are Barton Fink and it doesn’t do us a lot of good to pretend we aren’t. It’s not the worst thing in the world to be, and we can grow and change, as I believe he does in the end. For him its a very painful change that involved destroying everything else in his life and having almost nowhere to go from then on, but whatevs!!!!

This is what happened when I was travelling 2 days ago. I wanted to get it down as soon as I got home.

Sometimes, I fuck up on details like this. I know everyone makes mistakes sometimes, but I feel I mess things like this up more often than the average person. I try very, very hard to be aware of that and pay attention and not make mistakes like this, but it still happens sometimes. I feel pretty bad about it, especially because it makes me feel like I can’t trust myself, but what can ya do. :/

Yeah, it has to do with the older generation of monsters being pretty imperfect and having lots more drawbacks than the Alpha generation (Ayo & the main 4, etc) has. It’ll be touched on a little in this chapter.
