Boxcar Bertha. 1972. The second Scorsese-directed film.
I don’t have quite as much to say about this one. It’s fun, character-driven western heist, based on a true story, that ends in the shockingly bloody downfall of its heroes. Sounds familiar. It had some nice moments, and I really enjoyed Barry Primus as Rake. Skimming over his IMDB, that actor doesn’t seem to have done much notable work, but he’s in New York, New York so I’m looking forward to seeing him in that.
Mostly this just felt strangely atypical, like Scorsese was trying out a different kind of movie and seeing how it felt. I enjoyed it and by the end I was surprised by how attached I had grown to the characters, but it didn’t inspire or enthrall me the way Who’s That Knocking did.
Next: Mean Streets. YAY!
